Semiconductor materials can be divided into three generations according to the time sequence. The first generation of germanium, silicon and other common monomaterials, which is characterised by convenient switching, generally used in integrated circuits. The second generation of gallium arsenide, indium phosphide and other compound semiconductors, mainly used for light-emitting and communication materials.

The current third-generation semiconductors are primarily based on Silicon Carbide, with substrates accounting for 47% of device costs, and epitaxy accounting for 23%, totaling approximately 70% and forming the most crucial part of the SiC device manufacturing industry.

Defect-free epitaxial growth occurs when one crystal lattice has nearly identical lattice constants to another. Growth happens when lattice sites of the two lattices at the interface region are approximately matched, which is possible with a small lattice mismatch (less than 0.1%). This approximate matching is achieved even with elastic strain at the interface, where each atom is slightly displaced from its original position in the boundary layer. While a small amount of strain is tolerable for thin layers and even desirable for quantum well lasers, the strain energy stored in the crystal is generally lowered by the formation of misfit dislocations, which involve a missing row of atoms in one lattice.

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics, known for their high strength, hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature stability, have demonstrated immense potential and value across numerous industrial sectors since their introduction.

SiC substrates are the most crucial component in the silicon carbide industry, accounting for nearly 50% of its value. Without SiC substrates, it is impossible to manufacture SiC devices, making them the essential material foundation.

In conclusion, both graphitization and carbonization are industrial processes that involve carbon either as a reactant or a product. Carbonization refers to the process of converting organic matter into carbon, while graphitization involves transforming carbon into graphite. Therefore, carbonization is classified as a chemical change, whereas graphitization is recognized as a microstructural change.
