The Silicon Carbide (SiC) production process encompasses the preparation of substrate and epitaxy from the materials side, followed by chip design and manufacturing, device packaging, and finally, distribution to downstream application markets. Among these stages, substrate material processing is the most challenging aspect of the SiC industry. SiC substrates are both hard and brittle, making cutting, grinding, and polishing extremely difficult. This increases the likelihood of defects during processing and reduces the yield rate. Currently, major international SiC manufacturers are planning to transition from 6-inch to 8-inch SiC wafers. The growth of GaN epitaxy on GaN substrate presents a unique challenge, despite the material’s superior properties when compared to silicon. GaN epitaxy offers significant advantages in terms of band gap width, thermal conductivity, and breakdown electric field over silicon-based materials. This makes the adoption of GaN as the backbone for the third generation of semiconductors, which provide enhanced cooling, lower conduction loss, and improved performance under high temperatures and frequencies, a promising and crucial advancement for the photonic and micro-electronic industries.

The most basic stage of all processes is the oxidation process. The oxidation process is to place the silicon wafer in an atmosphere of oxidants such as oxygen or water vapor for high-temperature heat treatment (800~1200℃), and a chemical reaction occurs on the surface of the silicon wafer to form an oxide film (SiO2 film).

SiC MOSFETs are transistors that offer high power density, improved efficiency, and low failure rates at high temperatures. These advantages of SiC MOSFETs bring numerous benefits to electric vehicles (EVs), including longer driving range, faster charging, and potentially lower cost battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Over the past five years, SiC MOSFETs have been widely used in the power electronics of EVs in vehicles from OEMs such as Tesla and Hyundai. In fact, SiC inverters accounted for 28% of the BEV market in 2023.

Carbon-based materials such as graphite, carbon fibers, and carbon/carbon (C/C) composites are known for their high specific strength, high specific modulus, and excellent thermal properties, making them suitable for a wide range of high-temperature applications. These materials are widely utilized in aerospace, chemical engineering, and energy storage. However, their susceptibility to oxidation and corrosion in high-temperature environments, along with poor scratch resistance, restricts their further application.
