1. The Science of Dry Gas Seal (DGS) Principles


A SiC Seal Face for DGS is a non-contacting, end-face mechanical seal that relies on a thin film of gas to separate the sealing surfaces. This technology eliminates the need for complex oil lubrication systems, reducing both environmental impact and maintenance costs.


The operational magic happens through hydrodynamic lift. The rotating seal face (usually made of SiC) is precision-etched with microscopic hydrodynamic grooves—typically spiral, "T," or "U" shapes. As the shaft rotates at high velocities, these grooves draw the process or buffer gas inward, compressing it.


This compression creates a high-pressure "gas cushion" that exerts an opening force, maintaining a stable gap of approximately 3 to 5 microns between the stationary and rotating faces. Because there is no physical contact during operation, friction and wear are nearly zero. However, the material must be capable of surviving "touchdown" during startup and shutdown, as well as resisting the immense centrifugal forces of high-speed rotation.
