Japan recently restricted exports of 23 types of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The announcement has sent ripples across the industry, as the move is expected to have a significant impact on global supply chains for semiconductor manufacturing.

In the rapidly evolving field of semiconductor manufacturing, even the smallest improvements can make a big difference when it comes to achieving optimal performance, durability, and efficiency. One advancement that is generating a lot of buzz in the industry is the use of TaC (Tantalum Carbide) coating on graphite surfaces. But what exactly is TaC coating, and why are semiconductor manufacturers taking notice of it?

Epitaxial growth refers to the process of growing a crystallographically well-ordered monocrystalline layer on a substrate. Generally speaking, epitaxial growth involves the cultivation of a crystal layer on a single-crystal substrate, with the grown layer sharing the same crystallographic orientation as the original substrate. Epitaxy is extensively utilized in semiconductor manufacturing, such as the production of epitaxial silicon wafers in the integrated circuit industry.

As a third-generation semiconductor material, Gallium Nitride is often compared with Silicon Carbide. Gallium Nitride still demonstrates its superiority with its large bandgap, high breakdown voltage, high thermal conductivity, high saturated electron drift velocity and strong radiation resistance. But it is undeniable that, like Silicon Carbide, Gallium Nitride also has various technical difficulties.

Currently, many semiconductor devices employ mesa device structures, which are predominantly created through two types of etching: wet etching and dry etching. While the simple and rapid wet etching plays a significant role in semiconductor device fabrication, it has inherent drawbacks such as isotropic etching and poor uniformity, which result in limited control when transferring small-sized patterns. Dry etching, however, with its high anisotropy, good uniformity, and repeatability, has become prominent in semiconductor device fabrication processes. The term “dry etching” broadly refers to any non-wet etching technology used for removing surface materials and transferring micro and nano patterns, including laser etching, plasma etching, and chemical vapor etching. The dry etching discussed in this text specifically pertains to the narrow application of processes using plasma discharge—either physical or chemical—to modify material surfaces.
