What is the Dry Gas Seal System?

In modern industrial applications, there are many high-power, high-speed fluid machines (such as turbo compressors and blowers), and their sealing elements at critical sections operate under extreme working conditions characterized by high rotational speed, elevated pressure and intense temperature. The conventional contact-type mechanical seals are no longer able to adopt to these demanding applicaion scenarios. Therefore, dry gas seal systems, with their outstanding performance, have been widely adopted as a premium non-contact sealing solution for these critical applications.

The dry gas seal system is the non-contact shaft sealing system that uses gas as the operating medium. By machining hydrodynamic grooves on the sealing faces, dry gas seal systems leverage the hydrodynamic effect generated during rotation to form a stable gas film between the sealing faces. This stable gas film can keep the sealing faces i the non-contact state, thereby achieving effective sealing of gases and liquids.

The Main Components of Dry Gas Seal Systems

1. Sealing components: Including rotating rings, Stationary rings, Springs, O-rings.

2. Gas supply systems

3. Control systems: including the equipment like pressure sensors, flow meters.

The Advantages of Dry Gas Seal Systems

1. Non-contact operation, no friction or wear, long seal life, and low maintenance costs.

2. Low leakage, excellent gas film sealing effect, with leakage far lower than traditional seals.

3. No oil contamination of process media and simplifying system complexity.

4. Adaptable to high speed and high pressure, not limited by PV value.

The Main Types and Application Scenarios

1. Single-face dry gas seal

It is well-suited for the medium and low pressure operating conditions, which allows small amount of process gas leakage to the ambient atmosphere, such as the compressors handling non-hazardous gases including air, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

2. Double-face dry gas seal

Adopting the structure of two single-face seals arranged face-to-face, it is well-suited for the operating conditions where process gas leakage to the ambient atmosphere is not permitted. By introducing the sealing gases between the two seals, the barrier seal is formed using a gas pressure higher than that of the medium, which only allows a small amount of sealing gas to enter.

3. Tandem dry gas seal

It is composed of two or more single-face seals connected in series, which are suitable for applications allowing slight process gas leakage to the atmosphere, such as compressors in the chemical and oil refining industries. The main seal undertakes most of the pressure load, and the backup seal provides a safety seal in the event of main seal failure. In some tandem dry gas seal systems, the labyrinth seals are also incorporated. This configuration is suitable for applications where process gas leakage into the atmosphere is not permitted and sealing gas is not allowed to enter the machine.
