Photovoltaic Industry Development Overview

2023-07-31

By 2027, solar photovoltaic (PV) will overtake coal as the world's largest installed capacity. The cumulative installed capacity of solar PV nearly triples in our forecast, growing by nearly 1,500 gigawatts over this period, and will surpass natural gas by 2026 and coal by 2027. Over the next five years, annual additions of solar photovoltaic power will increase annually. Despite the current increase in investment costs due to higher commodity prices, utility-scale solar PV is the lowest-cost new generation option in the vast majority of countries worldwide. Distributed solar photovoltaics, such as rooftop solar power for buildings, will also see accelerated growth as a result of rising retail electricity prices and policy support to help consumers save money on their energy bills.

For photovoltaic products, in terms of export regions, Europe remains the largest module export market, while wafer and cell exports are concentrated in Asia. Module exports to Africa grew particularly significantly, with module exports mainly to South Africa increasing more than threefold year-on-year. The European market, especially the household market, is more complicated to apply for installation procedures, coupled with the shortage of installation workers, coupled with the high level of distributor inventory, the export growth rate is likely to slow down.
