PBN, or pyrolytic boron nitride, belongs to the hexagonal system and is an advanced inorganic non-metallic material with a purity of up to 99.999%. It has good density, no pores, good insulation and thermal conductivity, high temperature resistance, chemical inertness, acid resistance, alkali resistance, and oxidation resistance. It has obvious anisotropy in mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. It is an ideal crucible and key component in semiconductor crystal growth (VGF method, VB method, LEC method, HB method), polycrystalline synthesis, MBE epitaxy, OLED evaporation, high-end semiconductor equipment, high-power microwave tubes, etc. PBN is made by using advanced chemical vapor deposition technology. Under high temperature and high vacuum conditions, high-purity boron halides and ammonia and other raw materials are introduced into the CVD reaction chamber. After cracking reaction, it slowly grows on the surface of substrates such as graphite. PBN can be directly grown into containers such as crucibles, boats, and tubes, or it can be deposited into plates first and then processed into various PBN parts. It can also be coated on other substrates for protection, and product specifications are customized according to application scenarios. Unlike ordinary hot-pressed sintered boron nitride, PBN is prepared using advanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which has strong technical barriers and a high degree of industry concentration.
PBN products play an irreplaceable role in the semiconductor field. Downstream applications mainly involve crystal growth, polycrystalline synthesis, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), OLED, organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), high-end semiconductor equipment parts, aerospace and other fields.
1) Crystal growth
The growth of compound semiconductor single crystals (such as gallium arsenide, indium phosphide, etc.) requires an extremely strict environment, including temperature, raw material purity, and the purity and chemical inertness of the growth container. PBN crucible is currently the most ideal container for compound semiconductor single crystal growth. The main methods for compound semiconductor single crystal growth are LEC method, HB method, VB method and VGF method. The corresponding PBN crucibles include LEC crucible, VB crucible and VGF crucible.
2) Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)
MBE is one of the most important epitaxial growth processes of III-V and II-VI semiconductors in the world today. This type of technology is a method of growing thin films layer by layer along the crystal axis of the substrate material under appropriate substrates and suitable conditions. PBN crucible is a necessary source furnace container in the MBE process.
3) Organic light-emitting diode display (OLED)
OLED is considered to be a new generation of flat panel display technology because of its excellent characteristics such as self-luminescence, no need for backlight, high contrast, thin thickness, wide viewing angle, fast reaction speed, can be used for flexible panels, wide operating temperature range, simple structure and process. The evaporator is the core component of the OLED evaporation system. Among them, the PBN guide ring and crucible are the main components of the evaporation unit. The guide ring needs to have good thermal conductivity and insulation performance, can be processed into complex shapes, and does not deform or release gas at high temperatures. The crucible needs to have ultra-high purity, high temperature resistance, electrical insulation, and no wetting with the source material. PBN is an ideal material for widespread use.
4) High-end semiconductor equipment
As semiconductor chips continue to develop towards miniaturization and high power, the requirements for semiconductor manufacturing equipment and systems are becoming higher and higher. PBN material products are widely used in the core components of high-end equipment due to their ultra-high purity, high thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and various anisotropy of performance.
